The LAO local area office processes applications for legal aid certificates in several areas of law. These areas include:

  • Criminal (e.g.: assault with a weapon, sexual assault, robbery, trafficking narcotics, or any charge that if convicted may carry a jail sentence)
  • Family (Support, Custody and Access)
  • Immigration law (deportation, detention reviews and meetings before the Immigration and Refugee Board)

If you are found to be eligible, you will be issued a Legal Aid certificate. This certificate can be taken to a lawyer who accepts Legal Aid Certificates and LAO will pay that lawyer's fees. There may be repayment conditions attached to the certificate.

Chatham-Kent Victim Services

Provides crisis intervention, emotional support, practical assistance and referrals to victims of crime. Call 519-436-6630.

Chatham Outreach For Hunger

Food bank located in Chatham serves all of Chatham-Kent. Call 519-351-8381.

Tilbury Information & Help Centre

Provides information and referral on community programs and services. Call 519-682-2268.
